Strangely they tended to get out of sync a little which I really don't understand. We made some minor adjustments so we should be good now. Also we adjusted the panning so that you hear me (Jon) in your left ear and Zo in your right. Everybody else may be sort of inbetween.

Episode 27: Point Break

Wow! Only an hour has passed since the last commentary and already we're back with a vengeance. Is there a more perfect movie than Point Break? Maybe, maybe Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it's close.

We discuss Keanu's lack of merit, yet his ability to be in incredible movies. Also, toward the end I mention the serious/cheese overlap of the movie that makes it so fun. Tangents galore in the middle.

Episode 24: Road House

In honor of the great Patrick Swayze we're goin' ahead and rollin' with Road House. I voted to do Point Break, but we figured this one would be funner to do, plus Swayze's got more of a starring role.

Zo and Dave join me as usual (can't get rid of those guys). We got no Jen, but Brandon joins us for the first time. He's the ginger about to join the army. Also, we brought Scott back. He actually works as a bouncer for a living, so it's pretty obvious.

Episode 23: Kill Bill: Vol. 2

Supposedly there's only a minute of difference between Japanese and American version and most of the additional material is near the end -- so there shouldn't be too much of a problem if you watch your region 1 DVD.

Episode 21: Legend (Theatrical Cut)

Okay, usually at this point in the blog we throw in there a bunch of screenshots from the movie with some witty comments. Unfortunately, this one was a rental, so we didn't have time to get the screenshots. Here's a cute one of Mia Sara downloaded from somewhere. The fact that it's a rental says a lot. None of us are actually fans of the movie, but we knew that this was a commentary that needed to be done. Of course most of us are still in the dark(ness) about what this flick is actually about. I think most of us are still unsure about whether or not we even like the movie Legend. Speaking for myself, I think I'm a fan. It's a lot like when I read Wuthering Heights in high school and absolutely loathed it, but for some reason it stayed with me for years. That's what this movie is. It's bad in ways, but far far far from forgettable.

Joining this time we got Zo, Jen, Dave and Mark. Joe joined us for the beginning while we got Regan and Rhett for the end.

Episode 20: Highlander (Director's Cut)

Who wants to live forever? I think it was Woody Allen who said something like "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying." This time we set records again with how many of us there were. Joining me this time: Dave (our Highlander expert), Joe (our Highlander virgin), Jaime (our commentary virgin), Jen (quiet, but cute), Zo (the boundary breaker) and Mark (mumbly guy). Making quick cameos, we had Rhett and Regan. Freakin' love this movie. In my opinion "there can only be one" Highlander movie. Too good of a story to spread out over a half dozen other movies and TV shows.

So few people understand this movie that it needs a title card explaining what Sean Connery will eventually explain anyway.

This little girl actually made this tongue gesture to the greasy '80s wrestler.

Episode 19: Watchmen

Come one come all to our longest commentary yet: the Zack Snyder film Watchmen. Maybe we should say the Alan Moore film, since Snyder pretty much lifted the images from the pages of the graphic novel. We would say that, but Moore would undoubtedly get really mad at us since he didn't want his name anywhere near this movie. Joining me for this very full commentary are stalwarts Jen and Zo, plus Joe Evans plays Watchmen convert. Also there's Mark, a complete Watchmen virgin. Showing up late (someone always does) is Maxim.

Here of course is the image of the Comedian falling out the window at the beginning of the movie. If somehow you haven't seen this image in the past year -- here it is.

Just about my favorite image in the movie. The lady who hardly gets any screen time at all is named Silhouette.

Don't you just love these brilliant, cheery opening credits?

Public service: screengrabbing these magazines so that you have time to look at them beyond the 1.2 seconds of screentime they get.

Capturing screen images from this movie was the funnest ever. So much imagery not seen everywhere already.

Episode 18: Predator 2

Through much peer pressure I've given in. It was demanded that we do Predator 2 since Zo and Jen hate it while Maxim and Scott love it. Fortunately both parties (finally) made it to the debate. Conclusion: neutral. Is the "urban jungle" a nice evolution of the franchise or a silly gimmick? Is the sequel automatically bad for simply being a sequel to something so good? What is the best Gary Busey movie? Zo and Jen don't pop in until a half hour into the movie, so be patient.

I think we missed this title card. We were pretty confused about when the flick takes place.

Episode 17: Rambo

Alright, here we go with just about the funniest movie I've seen in a long long time. Don't confuse this one with Rambo: First Blood Part II or any of the other Rambo movies. This is the fourth one. The one that just came out. The one where Sly Stallone was busted for steroid use during the production. With me as always are Zo and Jen. The first three minutes sounds a bit garbled because we had the movie turned up, but after that, it's pretty clear. Enjoy!

Episode 16: The Running Man

I want to get off the hiatus of The Jon Madsen Movie Commentary Podcast.

We haven't done a new commentary in several months and it's totally time to start up again. Part of the problem is that logistically it's pretty hard to reserve a time and place as well as worry about all the technical issues (i.e. where to put our one microphone and having enough headphones for everybody, etc.). A bigger problem is simply getting people to do it with me. It's difficult to cram people into my room or wherever we do it and I always feel weird asking people to do it, because even though it's a lot of fun, it's still sort of a favor to me.

Anyway, I want to try something pioneering in the practice of movie commentaries. A week from today at 3:00 p.m. (schedule permitting), I'm going to watch and comment on the movie Sixteen Candles.

Here's the deal. If you're reading this, I want YOU to participate. What I'm going to do is broadcast my voice over my account on Ustream. Also, I now have the technology available to me to broadcast the video of Sixteen Candles at the same time. That way, as you're watching the movie through Ustream, you can go ahead and chat with me what YOU want to say about the movie and then I can say it. Doesn't that sound fun? I know, I love Sixteen Candles too. Hopefully since it's a Friday afternoon, many of you won't have too much of a workload.

You may be asking the question right now, "Jon, if we're watching the movie at the same time how are we going to chat in our comments in time for you to say them at the appropriate time?" Well, the answer to that is that the movie you watch will be broadcast to you 30 seconds before the movie I watch. That way we can plan for the chatting delay and the Ustream broadcast delay. Oh, and before you can chat, you may need to sign up with Ustream. Don't worry, you don't need to pay any money and you have a whole week to do so.

Hopefully it works. Please help me make it work. And I still want to do the live commentaries. If you want to do one please let me know and I'll make whatever accommodations you need. I'm looking at you, Brad the archeologist, about a possible Raiders of the Lost Ark commentary (gosh, we really should have done it before the new movie came out).

happy birthday to me!

So yesterday I got a kind of weird birthday present in the form of Zarban finding our little commentary dealie we're doing right now and adding our commentaries to his galactic database! See the comment on the previous post if I didn't sound that out properly. It's a sign that we're gonna need to continue the project soon. I'm also real excited to discover this "House of Commentaries." He's got nearly 1000 different dvd commentaries from different creators listed over there. I'm excited to try a few out for the listen. Hopefully, others like us will want to try out some of the ones we've done here. Anyway, notice the new link over on the right.

Episode 11: Raising Arizona (Part 1)

On today's installment we welcome Maria's new roommate, Carri (mentioned briefly in our Transformers commentary and made a brief appearance in our Footloose commentary)! Carri claims that Raising Arizona is the funniest movie yet filmed. I could not produce a counter-argument.

This episode marks the first and possibly last use of the JMMCP theme music! Ten minutes on Garageband. No joke. Yeah, I know it totally sounds like two minutes, but yeah. Ten minutes.

Before I forget, let me just mention that I mentioned during the commentary that Fred Ward, the guy from Tremors, is in this movie. He is not. Nathan Arizona Sr. is actually played by Trey Wilson.

For the most part, I can't think of any good captions for these screen grabs. None that would do justice anyway.
Actually this shot is pretty interesting because I totally lifted it for a film I shot in high school called Asbestos Man vs. Evil Man. Actually "film" is a pretty strong word for what it was. The credited "artists" for this particular podcast should read: Jon, Maria, Monica, Melinda, Joseph, Carri and Rhett -- definitely a new record! Hopefully you can hear Joe talking about how awesome of a movie Ricochet is. Personally, I think it's a total highlight. Also, that clicking sound you hear through half of the audio file is just Joe and Carri playing Guitar Hero in the other room. So, in short... we had a lot of fun, and you can tell. Hopefully it doesn't sound too annoying though.

Anyway, part 2 starts with chapter 7.

Episode 10: Footloose (Part 1)

I just have to say first of all that Footloose is a heckuva film. I totally forgot how good it is and I'm not saying that in some campy or ironic way or anything. It's just awesome and I had a real good time watching this one. With that said, I'm really sad to say that we must've talked over one of my favorite parts which is when Ren is telling Willard about this girl he met in a club in the big city. They're in the cafeteria. Even if you don't take part in the commentary, watch that part. It's great.

Joining us this week are Maria's two sisters: Monica and Melinda. Melinda made the trip all the way from Texas! Say Hooray!

Here's the scene I was talkin' about where Ren is telling Willard about the crazy chick he met in a club. Notice the guy who offers Ren a joint later in the movie is staring him down and pointing in the background.The movie never mentions where it's set, but notice that it's a cop from somewhere called "Bayson County." There's a town in Utah south of Provo called Payson, fyi. The cop is uncredited, but I'm pretty sure he's a Mormon actor who has appeared in several LDS films.
Melinda knows this chick driving the car. I can't remember the story. Just listen to the commentary for goodness' sake!I was gonna think of a funny caption for this shot, but it's probably not even necessary.

Today we make Movie Commentary Podcast history by commenting on a movie I don't like.

Contact from 1997 is a sorta sci-fi film mostly set on Earth with characters that mostly just talk or listen to ambient noise. The only thing more boring than the main characters in this movie are the aliens. It makes one wonder: should we bother exploring space when the aliens aren't even nifty enough to reveal themselves in a form other than David Morse?

This movie also began my unfortunate dislike of Jodie Foster. Sorry Jodie!

So for the first time in our little podcast's history, we will be doing a tv show instead of a movie. The first episode of Lost is better than most movies anyway, so let's get crackin.'

I actually never saw an entire episode of this show until this past Summer. I watched the first two seasons on dvd in a short amount of time. It's always real fun to hit up tv in that manner. No commercials and full seasonal resolutions.

This week I decided to add a new feature. I'm putting an audio mix of the program in the background to pad some of the more silent parts. Hopefully it will be a boon to the podcast instead of an annoyance. I certainly hope it's a good thing, because it takes a long time to properly mix the two sets of audio together. Maybe it would be a good reason to get Protools or something.

Maria's on co-host duty again. After we finished up she told me that she'd never actually seen the first episode until we did the commentary. You wouldn't know it.

Episode 1: Flash Gordon

Alright, here we go! Starting off with my all-time favorite movie (at least that's what I tell people).

Flash Gordon came out in 1980, but I actually didn't see it until I was in high school around 1993. Its stars are unknowns, its action is cheesy, the costumes are hokey... but it's absolutely glorious!

Ultimately I wound up buying the shirt after all. After talking about it, how could I not?
