I want to get off the hiatus of The Jon Madsen Movie Commentary Podcast.

We haven't done a new commentary in several months and it's totally time to start up again. Part of the problem is that logistically it's pretty hard to reserve a time and place as well as worry about all the technical issues (i.e. where to put our one microphone and having enough headphones for everybody, etc.). A bigger problem is simply getting people to do it with me. It's difficult to cram people into my room or wherever we do it and I always feel weird asking people to do it, because even though it's a lot of fun, it's still sort of a favor to me.

Anyway, I want to try something pioneering in the practice of movie commentaries. A week from today at 3:00 p.m. (schedule permitting), I'm going to watch and comment on the movie Sixteen Candles.


Here's the deal. If you're reading this, I want YOU to participate. What I'm going to do is broadcast my voice over my account on Ustream. Also, I now have the technology available to me to broadcast the video of Sixteen Candles at the same time. That way, as you're watching the movie through Ustream, you can go ahead and chat with me what YOU want to say about the movie and then I can say it. Doesn't that sound fun? I know, I love Sixteen Candles too. Hopefully since it's a Friday afternoon, many of you won't have too much of a workload.

You may be asking the question right now, "Jon, if we're watching the movie at the same time how are we going to chat in our comments in time for you to say them at the appropriate time?" Well, the answer to that is that the movie you watch will be broadcast to you 30 seconds before the movie I watch. That way we can plan for the chatting delay and the Ustream broadcast delay. Oh, and before you can chat, you may need to sign up with Ustream. Don't worry, you don't need to pay any money and you have a whole week to do so.

Hopefully it works. Please help me make it work. And I still want to do the live commentaries. If you want to do one please let me know and I'll make whatever accommodations you need. I'm looking at you, Brad the archeologist, about a possible Raiders of the Lost Ark commentary (gosh, we really should have done it before the new movie came out).

happy birthday to me!

So yesterday I got a kind of weird birthday present in the form of Zarban finding our little commentary dealie we're doing right now and adding our commentaries to his galactic database! See the comment on the previous post if I didn't sound that out properly. It's a sign that we're gonna need to continue the project soon. I'm also real excited to discover this "House of Commentaries." He's got nearly 1000 different dvd commentaries from different creators listed over there. I'm excited to try a few out for the listen. Hopefully, others like us will want to try out some of the ones we've done here. Anyway, notice the new link over on the right.

Okay I know it's been months and months since we've done a commentary, but we haven't forgotten or anything and this is still on our minds. Now that the writer's strike is over, we will return from hiatus shortly (not that that has anything to do with this).

Episode 11: Raising Arizona (Part 1)

On today's installment we welcome Maria's new roommate, Carri (mentioned briefly in our Transformers commentary and made a brief appearance in our Footloose commentary)! Carri claims that Raising Arizona is the funniest movie yet filmed. I could not produce a counter-argument.

This episode marks the first and possibly last use of the JMMCP theme music! Ten minutes on Garageband. No joke. Yeah, I know it totally sounds like two minutes, but yeah. Ten minutes.

Before I forget, let me just mention that I mentioned during the commentary that Fred Ward, the guy from Tremors, is in this movie. He is not. Nathan Arizona Sr. is actually played by Trey Wilson.

For the most part, I can't think of any good captions for these screen grabs. None that would do justice anyway.
Actually this shot is pretty interesting because I totally lifted it for a film I shot in high school called Asbestos Man vs. Evil Man. Actually "film" is a pretty strong word for what it was. Episode 10: Footloose (Part 2)

Ok, part 2 is where things start getting a little crazy. Maybe we shouldn't do the podcast in the front room anymore, because we got crashed a few times. I've got awesome friends though, and just about everybody had something to say. The credited "artists" for this particular podcast should read: Jon, Maria, Monica, Melinda, Joseph, Carri and Rhett -- definitely a new record! Hopefully you can hear Joe talking about how awesome of a movie Ricochet is. Personally, I think it's a total highlight. Also, that clicking sound you hear through half of the audio file is just Joe and Carri playing Guitar Hero in the other room. So, in short... we had a lot of fun, and you can tell. Hopefully it doesn't sound too annoying though.

Anyway, part 2 starts with chapter 7.

This one shot is better than the entire Wild Hogs movie.

Episode 10: Footloose (Part 1)

I just have to say first of all that Footloose is a heckuva film. I totally forgot how good it is and I'm not saying that in some campy or ironic way or anything. It's just awesome and I had a real good time watching this one. With that said, I'm really sad to say that we must've talked over one of my favorite parts which is when Ren is telling Willard about this girl he met in a club in the big city. They're in the cafeteria. Even if you don't take part in the commentary, watch that part. It's great.

Joining us this week are Maria's two sisters: Monica and Melinda. Melinda made the trip all the way from Texas! Say Hooray!

Here's the scene I was talkin' about where Ren is telling Willard about the crazy chick he met in a club. Notice the guy who offers Ren a joint later in the movie is staring him down and pointing in the background.The movie never mentions where it's set, but notice that it's a cop from somewhere called "Bayson County." There's a town in Utah south of Provo called Payson, fyi. The cop is uncredited, but I'm pretty sure he's a Mormon actor who has appeared in several LDS films.
Melinda knows this chick driving the car. I can't remember the story. Just listen to the commentary for goodness' sake!I was gonna think of a funny caption for this shot, but it's probably not even necessary.

I haven't seen that much blood in a teenager movie since Johnny Depp exploded in A Nightmare on Elm Street
